Alexander Vindman

Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired)
Doctor of International Affairs

Alex Vindman was most recently the director for European Affairs and Russia on the White House’s National Security Council. Before this role, he served as the Political-Military Affairs Officer for Russia for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as an attaché at the American Embassy in Moscow. While on the Joint Staff, he authored the U.S. National Military Strategy for Russia, analyzing and developing comprehensive short- and long-term military policies.

Born in what is now Ukraine, Alex immigrated to the United States with his father and brothers. This early experience shaped his understanding of resilience and adaptability, principles instilled by his father’s belief in continually “starting over.” His distinguished career in the military included critical insights gained during his time as the Assistant Army Attaché in Russia, where he regularly interacted with Russian military and diplomatic leaders, gaining deep insights into Russia’s defense and security apparatus.

Alex is a preeminent expert on Russia and Ukraine, uniquely positioned to provide insight into the complexities of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War. His latest book and instant New York Times bestseller, *The Folly of Realism: How the West Deceived Itself About Russia and Betrayed Ukraine*, offers a penetrating critique of Western policy failures and advocates a values-based approach to global security and liberal democracy.

He earned his master’s degree from Harvard University, where he now serves as a Hauser Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School, and his Doctorate from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), where he is currently a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute. Alex is also an executive board member for the nonprofit Renew Democracy Initiative, and the author of the acclaimed memoir Here, Right Matters. He has served as a military fellow at the Pritzker Military Museum & Library and the Lawfare Institute.

Alex remains deeply engaged with senior leaders in Washington and Kyiv and is dedicated to strengthening transatlantic security and democratic values globally.
